Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort

Hello Sunshine!

Yesterday was one of those day’s you want to hold your hands up in the air and scream “I LOVE THIS!” Temps have been in the high 40’s and the snow is a blast. It’s soft enough that you can really dig your edge in and lay down some huge carves. It feels like spring minus the slushy-ness. My absolute favorite trail is Challenger on the Backside where you have steeps, side-hits, close-by wide spaced trees and phenomenal views.

Another reason to rejoice – the famed DC STRAITS park is opening today! Our park groomers have been working hard to build this beauty and she is looking solid to say the least. The DC Straits is packed with sick features including staircases, wallrides, DC street rails and boxes, the gondola jib see in in this month’s Transworld, and more!  If you are here today you might be able to spot pro Chas Guldemond who is cruising the Straits before heading off to the Dew Tour.

Fun in the Sun

If you have always wanted a goggle tan but never had one, this is your week. The abundant sunshine and bright blue skies are bringing many smiles to Tahoe . Our rockstar groomers have been working hard each night to provide us with corduroy on over 70% of our trails.  And, people can't stop talking about how fun the park is right now!  There are over 50 features - from ride on boxes for beginners, to large jumps for the more experienced.

My personal plan of action for today is this: warm up in the sun on the terrain off of the Tahoe Zephyr, Comstock and Vista, followed by a Burton Progression session before lunch . Chilly Peppers ' chicken burrito will be calling my name before I start lapping The Backside in the afternoon sun . And, I'll be sipping a few brewskis on the Village Overlook while listening to the live jams of the Babylon Beach Band before heading home to wrap up my great day.

Blue Bird Days at Northstar!

It's about time we got a good dose of sun! Don't get me wrong, I love the snow, but I do appreciate the sun when it comes out. There is nothing like a freshly cut pipe and a sky as blue as can be! This is what Northstar Resort is all about, struggling to keep that goggle tan at bay. Although the jump line in Pinball may be closed, it gives us all a chance to do some exploring on the mountain.

Props to you if you know where this (picture below) all natural spot is! Here's a hint, it's not in the stash. Anyway get out there and enjoy the amazing weather and fantastic conditions! -Cory "Snow Reporter"

New Year's Eve at Northstar

New Year’s Eve will literally be popping off in the Village tonight with an exciting fireworks show, Polynesian Paradise dancers, live music & more! The Fire & Ice festivities will kick off at 5:30 with Departure, a Journey tribute band, rocking hit after hit to get the party going. Next up the polynesian dancers will be grooving for our viewing pleasure on the Village Overlook at 7pm. At 9pm the fireworks will be launched from the bottom of Home Run ski run, providing a close up view of the fireworks display!

A word from the Snow Reporter:

There is a phrase here in snow country that is sometimes muttered after massive storms, “No friends on a powder day.” I believe this phrase misses one important thing... if there's 'no friends on a pow day,' who's going to hoot and holler with you when you carve those rippin' turns?!". You should ALWAYS ski/ride with your friends on powder days!

I hope your day was full of bottomless turns and blowing through powder! Mine sure was. Thank you La Nina. Thank you Santa. Thank whoever you want, but remember,  Nothing beats a powder day.

A Winter Wonderland

New Snow Alert!

27" of fresh snow graced The Summit in the past 24 hours, and the forecast calls for heavy snowfall over the next 48 hours, with snowfall totals in the range of 3-6 feet. The snow showers are expected to pick up intensity overnight, securing a huge powder day tomorrow!

I just got back from taking runs on Lookout Mountain - conditions are amazing! It is the perfect day to be "in the elements" carving huge powder turns, getting face-fulls of snow, and loving every minute.

Today is also the kick-off to our Holiday Festivities (conditions permitting) in The Village! Live music, s'mores and even Santa Claus will be in The Village. Tomorrow we will be offering Horse Drawn Sleigh Rides (conditions permitting) - tickets are $10 and can be purchased in the Season Pass Office.

Attention Snow Lovers: Winter Storm Update

Old Man Winter is back to deliver! We are gearing up for a snow-filled week ahead. It may be raining where you live, but in the higher elevations the snowflakes are flying! This upcoming storm will secure fantastic conditions for the Holiday's. It's time to wax up your pow sticks - La Nina is coming in full force!

We may see up to 6-8" of snowfall on the mountain throughout the day then showers will taper off this evening, bringing in colder temps, less wind and drier weather. 

Wet weather will return Friday and last for several days with significant snowfall totals for higher elevations through early next week. Totals may range from 5 to 10 feet of snow by mid to late next week! Remember, Northstar's slopes offer excellent protection from the wind.

December 3rd Snow Conditions Update

Another 10” inches of fresh snow overnight contributed to our already plentiful base depths and made for an awesome Friday on the mountain.  Early this morning I hustled into my gear and headed up the Vista Express.  Conditions were incredible! It must have ‘blown-in’ some area’s because I was ripping through knee-deep fresh snow and carving my heart out! With the combination of early season powder riding and 43 degree temperatures, I would recommend taking off a layer or two before hopping onto the gondola. That is one of the best parts about skiing/riding at Northstar; it will be snowing like crazy overnight, followed by bright blue skies and warm temperatures the very next day!

A November to Remember

 

I love the fact that it's November 27th and I have already had 5 powder days.  I love that those powder days were full of face shots and bottomless turns. I love feeling exhausted at the end of a great day. I also love the fact that it is still snowing. Hard.

I have many favorite spots to hunt for powder here at Northstar. Yesterday I felt particularly ecstatic when I was on my way up the Comstock chair and got word that the Backside ropes were just about to drop. We dropped into the trees and heard a stunning q u i e t. Then something great happened. My partner Cory had decided to shoot slow-mo, and asked me to do a slash for the camera, and let me tell you, I got him good. I slashed so much snow on him that his face was covered and I could barely see his eyes poking out. We both laughed for a bit and then got back to ripping tree runs through untouched powder fields.  Here is a quick glimpse into that moment:

Now Open Top-to-Bottom, Front-to-Back!

Top-to-bottom, front-to-back! The Backside opened this morning – just a week into the 2010-2011 winter season! Amazing what a little snow can do… ;)

You now have 74 trails to choose from, a slew of terrain park features, and powder turns galore! The NOAA forecast for the weekend includes more snow! And, there’s the possibility of more mid-week next week.
